Executive Committee

Jon Smith - Chair

"After my daughters joined the club and I realised that it was run by volunteers I was keen to help out in some way. My first experience was to hold a stopwatch at the end of the lane at a club gala. Shortly afterwards I was asked to train as a teacher and help with the coaching.

The club supported my development and I have now qualified as a Level 2 teacher and Level 1 coach. I do not have any swimming experience as rugby was my preferred sport.

I teach the stroke improvers and adult swimmers on a Monday night and coach the junior squads on Sundays. Since 2005 I have coached 5 hours a week and seen many of our senior swimmers develop through the squads.
This has its challenges but it is great to see the swimmers progress and move on to compete for the club.

Our club needs volunteers to support it and continue the success we have achieved in the pool. You do not have to be a proven swimmer or county champion to get involved. If you feel you are able to help in any way please speak to me or any of the committee to learn more about the club."

Rachel Merelie - Treasurer

Bryan Thompson - Secretary

"I began in swimming as the taxi service for Amy & Annie. When Izzy started swimming at a club as well I had a choice to make – become a swimming widow (Annie was coaching by this point) or get involved. I'm not a good swimmer – technically nor staminarly (is that a real word?) so coaching wasn't an option. I was talked into becoming an Official and then joined the clubs committee. I am now a J2S (Judge Level 2 Starter) which means I can Referee at low level meets and can Timekeep/Judge/Start at any level.

When we moved to Harpenden I joined the Committee as I felt I had ideas to help the club. Within a short period I was proposed to join the Hertfordshire Swimming League committee where I eventually took on the roles of Results & Compliance Officers – a position I filled for several years.  I then got nominated to join the Hertfordshire ASA Management Board – partly due to my ignorance as I actually wanted to get onto the Herts ASA Swimming Committee and assumed the Management Board split into sub-committees – I was wrong! However, I did also get nominated and elected to the Herts ASA Swimming Committee as a committee member. Within a year I found myself at a Management Board meeting where we were discussing finding a new Swimming Manager.  As there were no obvious candidates and we were discussing lots of “knowledge” requirements I stuck my hat in the ring as the novice alternative and was put into the post in 2008. In 2010 our Club Secretary was standing down and it was obvious that the role needed some knowledge of the workings of swimming clubs so I got myself nominated for that as well. In 2012 I decided that I wanted to understand more about how things worked at the Regional  level and through a slightly convoluted route ended up being accepted as ASA East Region Technical Swimming Manager – a very grand title.

So through being inquisitive about how things work at different levels I am now Harpenden Club Secretary, Herts ASA Management Board member, Herts ASA Swimming Manager, and ASA East Region Swimming Manager.

In a relatively short time I have gained a fair amount of knowledge of clubs, counties & regions. I have touched to a greater or lesser degree on Officiating, Club Secretary roles, swim21 accreditation, development plans, membership, team selection, meet organisation, social secretary, communications officer, website administrator and database administrator.

I think I can lay most of the blame for this at Amy’s door… but I do thoroughly enjoy doing it. There is an immense satisfaction in seeing swimmers achieve even if they are not yours. I am always happy to talk to anyone who wants to know about any of the roles or is unsure about what any of the various documents/notes mean that we publish – don’t be scared to ask. That’s probably enough from me – hope it gives you an insight and if you want to get involved please speak to us – the more people that help the more we can do."

COMMITTEE

The administrative side of Harpenden Swimming Club is run by a team of volunteers. The committee is mainly made up of parents of swimmers and they ensure that the club keeps running.

Committee

Annie Thompson - Head Coach

"Having swum competitively in her youth, Annie began coaching when daughter Amy started swimming at the age of 10. She started working with Harpenden in 2005 and moved over officially when Amy and Izzy switched to Harpenden in 2006. Annie does 13 hours a week on poolside as well as spending large amounts of her time away from poolside planning, writing schedules etc. She currently holds the ASA Level 3 Coaching certificate. In September 2012 Annie became head coach."

Liz Smart - Membership Secretary

"I am Elena’s mum, and after she had been swimming with HSC for a while I thought it was about time to get involved and give something back to the Club that she loves. I'm not a swimmer myself but I do enjoy a good spreadsheet so when the membership role came up for grabs I couldn't help myself.  In a similar vein I maintain the "criteria spreadsheet" and help Annie update our swimmers’ progression through the squads."

"My eldest daughter Emma joined Harpenden Swim Club in September 2011, she’s now progressed to Dolphins and her sister Beth joined Seals in February. I’ve swum twice a week at Nuffield Health in St Albans for over 15 years, and I only learnt front crawl when I was 34! I’ve taken the girls for swimming lessons since they were tiny so it’s lovely to see them still enjoying it, although I’m careful not to race with them anymore! As swimming is such a big part of our lives I wanted to give something back to the club.  For the last few years I have been working in Marketing and I joined the committee to concentrate on Marketing and Sponsorship. I’m keen to get some local PR for the club as it’s an easy way to raise HSC’s profile and get new members.  We’re also going to refocus our efforts on getting some sponsorship, so if you own a local company or work for someone who is looking for that special marketing opportunity please let me know!"

Anna Akerlund

"Mother of two daughters, my eldest Joella loves swimming and joined the club in September 2012 as a Seal. I decided to join the HSC committee this year after seeing how much time and effort the coaches put into developing the children and I wanted to give a little back and to help grow the club. I have taken on the role of Lifeguard Coordination. Originally from Sweden,  I moved to the UK in 1994 and have a professional background in running an online retail business and buying for national retail chains."

Louise Murphy

"I am not a swimmer but both my girls, Ella & Georgina, love swimming and as they are both now avid members of the club, it was time to get involved!  I have been astonished by about the amount of work and effort that goes into running the club on a VOLUNTARY basis. The club is achieving great things and I wanted to help by supporting this team of volunteers.  So far, I have helped with the Club Champs, producing certificates, ordering medals, engraving trophies, organising the prize-giving event; and I'm helping out with our inaugural gala too!  None of it is difficult, but, as they say, every little helps!"

Non-Committee Helpers

Turid Luedecke - Pool Bookings

"I take care of booking the various different pools Harpenden SC trains at. I also check all incoming pool invoices to ensure they are correct before passing them on to our treasurer. I was born and raised in Germany and came to the UK in 1997. Although I was quite a sporty kid and spent most summer afternoons in the local outdoor pool, competitive swimming was never one of my sporting activities - I now wish it had been! Luckily, my sons showed an early aptitude for swimming, so I was delighted when both of them joined Harpenden SC in 2011 (Yannik joined the competitive section in January 2011, Luka joined the stroke improvers in September 2011). My professional background is in IT and project management. I currently work for an American software company in the Banking sector. I firmly believe that every club or organisation needs its members' committed support, so I happily took on the role of pool bookings coordinator to do my bit. What can you do?"

Rachel Hoddinott - Newsletter Editor

"I got involved with the club about four years ago when my older daughter Caitlin joined. Little did I know then that I was signing up to a lifetime of weekends spending eight hours on pool-sides just to watch Caitlin in the water for about eight minutes, a ratio that is getting even worse now she's older and swims a bit faster! Of course, now she's made it to the lofty heights of Squad and is too old for things like Peanuts galas, my younger daughter Maddie has just joined Seals so we're starting all over again!

If you don't know what I look like, you've probably heard my voice a few times since I made a critical mistake of saying 'yes' a couple of years ago when Bryan persuaded me to do the announcing at 'just one' club gala - if anyone else fancies practising their 'BBC' voice at any forthcoming galas I'll gladly relinquish my mike. I've also just taken over responsibility for the club newsletter, so please do let me know if you have any stories or articles you'd like included, or any ideas for features.

I also run the land training sessions for Squad and Sharks on a Monday evening at the Girls’ School. Everything goes – from Zumba, to circuits, to kick boxing. Some ‘old skool’ music makes it all feel less like hard work - requests taken!"

Claire Chauhan - Trials Coordinator

"My eldest daughter Jasmine is in the swimming club and loves it! I am the trials co-ordinator so I liaise with parents initally and arrange the swimming trials.  It is great to see that so many children want to join the club.  HSC is a fantastic club and it is great to be part of it and help make it bigger and better."

Dave Richardson - Officials Coordinator

Yvonne Wimbleton - Welfare Officer & Schools Liason Officer

Amy Thompson - Website & other online presence

"Having moved over from swimming to coaching I have also taken over responsibility for the clubs online presence. Alongside the website we also have a twitter account which has grown massively in popularity as a first stop for club updates, a youtube channel as the swimmers like making videos, and a blog which older swimmers contribute to. I also set up and run the various competitions that the club runs online."
